South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks' official colors are black and garnet, although some authorized merchandise does contain gold, representing the spurs worn by the historic gamecocks in their cockfights. Black & garnet were selected by Dr. J. William Flinn's family when in 1895; they presented to the South Carolina football team, a banner made up of those colors. After the year 1900 however, a fruitless effort was made to change these colors.
The department of athletics at the South Carolina University is maintained from private funding by the Gamecock Club, which was initially established as the "Buck-A-Month" Club to help the athletics program.
