One of the most eagerly awaited games in college sports is the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic, a time tested tradition in one of the most competitive conferences in the US. This college hockey tournament sees six of the toughest hockey teams in the US face each other in a series of matches to determine the winner. These are the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, University of Florida, Florida State, The Citadel and University of South Carolina. Savannah Tire Hockey Classic tickets are on sale for college hockey fans.
The very first edition of the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic was held at the Savannah Civic Center in 1999 and was titled as the Memorial Health Hockey Classic. Dubbed the 'Rumble in the Rink', it featured the tournament's four original hockey programs. The winner of the tournament won a championship that has been known as the 'Thrasher Cup' since then. The first winner of the Thrasher Cup was Georgia Tech in 1999's tournament.
In 2000, the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic was won by the University of Georgia with Georgia Tech's hockey program emerging as the champion three times in a row from 2001 to 2003. University of Georgia's hockey program wrestled the Thrasher Cup back in 2004 and continued winning the tournament consecutively in 2005, 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Florida State University won the Thrasher Cup, followed by Georgia Tech in 2009. In 2010, the University of Florida won the tournament, followed by Georgia Tech twice in 2011 and 2012.
The 2013 winners of the Thrasher Cup was the University of Georgia, the defending champions in the next tournament. The first match of the 2014 tournament will feature The Citadel versus the University of South Carolina. The second match of the tournament will see the Georgia Tech hockey program facing the Florida State University. The third match of the classic will have the University of Florida pitted against the University of Georgia. Florida State University will be playing against the University of Florida with the last match seeing the University of Georgia's hockey team play against the Georgia Tech University.
The tournament takes place at the amazing Savannah Civic Center, one of the best outdoor venues in Georgia. It is located at 301 W Oglethorpe Avenue in Savannah, Georgia, in the city's renowned Savannah Historic District. A public arena, owned by the City of Savannah, it was opened to the public in 1974. Aside from the classic, it hosts over nine hundred events each year and is home to the Martin Luther King Arena, the Civic Center Grand Ballroom, the Johnny Mercer Theatre and the West & East Promenades.
