San Francisco Dons represent the University of San Francisco while being the members of West Coast Conference and competing in the NCAA Division I competitions. The history of Athletics at the University of San Francisco goes all the way back to 1855, Anthony Maraschi S.J held the ball games for the very first time for the recreation purposes of the students and later he also laid foundation to Athletics department of the university. However, officially, the University took part in the intercollegiate competitions for the very first time back in 1907. Back then the school was known as the Saint Ignatius College and started competing with other colleges for the sports of rugby, basketball and baseball. It was around that time when San Francisco Dons developed a bitter rivalry with Saint Mary's College of California and the Santa Clara University.
Back in the day, the team was called the Grey Fog and their official colors were red and blue. It was in 1930 when the college started to be recognized as a college rather than a High School and from the college it turned into University of San Francisco in the same year. Almost three years ago in 1927, the college chose gold and green as its official colors and in 1932 Don was chosen as the team's official mascot. USF currently fields twelve varsity teams including and of those its Men's Baseball and Men's Basketball are the most prominent programs. Dons' baseball team has enjoyed a number of successes and achievements over the years, and among those years 2005 was perhaps the best year that the program has had. That year the team finished the season with the winning record of 38-18, which remains to the best in the team's history to date. That year, the team also won Nino Giarrantano coach of the year honor and eight players from the roster of the team ended up playing in the all-conference team. The following year WCC conference regular season championship made its way to the team as they finished their season with a winning record of 38-21. Doing so also earned the team a spot in top 25. Over the years the team has claimed a total of two Conference titles and has also made two NCAA Post season appearances. The team plays its home games at the Max Ulrich Field's Dante Benedetti Diamond.
San Francisco Dons' men's basketball team is perhaps the most prominent athletic program at the USF. The team has enjoyed major success at various points in history. They have claimed a total of three national championships which comprise of two NCAA Championships in 1955 and 1956 as well as the National Invitation Tournament in 1949.
