The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair or simply the Royal is an annually held winter carnival in Toronto, Canada during the first two weeks of November, at the Exhibition Place. Originally, it was held at the Coliseum when it started in 1922, but presently, the venue is the Direct Energy National Trade Centre. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is considered Canada's best agricultural display for livestock breeders at the inter-provincial or national level.Although, it was planned to be inaugurated in 1921, but was delayed due to the late installation of the heating system.
The first show was held on Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds on Nov. 22, 1922 and, since then, has been taking place annually, excluding the years during World War II. What is different about this fair is that it is solely an agricultural show, attracting competitors from across Canada and the globe. The Royal Winter Fair comprises of displays of the finest among Canadian agricultural products and technologies. Ever since it's inception, it has undergone enormous development and advancement over its three-quarters of century. During its first year, it drew 17,000 entries from several provinces and the United States to its livestock competitions. In the 1996 Fair, over 325,000 attended, including exhibitors, competitors, international visitors and members of the general public.
According to the show officials, last year's 12-day Fair comprised of "over 3,000 head of cattle, 1,300 horses, 1,600 birds, 500 sheep, 300 goats and 300 pigs" on display together with "world championship field crops, giant vegetables and many more agricultural products, educational exhibits and feature attractions".Through this platform, it has provided the opportunity to the farmers to exhibit new equipment, discuss new trends and showcase their wares.
Modifications:
In 1965, the federal Department of Agriculture, who infact are a long-time sponsor, established noteworthy changes. The number of livestock classes for each breed and the number of entries per breeder were lessened, new judging values were laid down underlining the efficacy of the breed, buildings were renovated, and the Winter Garden Show and Horse Show assumed new fame. Ever since it's opening, the Royal Horse Show is the third and final leg of the North American Fall Circuit and also offers prize money of over $525,000. A popular constituent of the Fair, Horse Show organizers say that "heavy horse hitches, coaching carriages, hackneys, road horses, hunters, jumpers, ponies and special features entertain 75,000 attending." The International Show Jumping Competition is a highlight of the competition.
75th anniversary celebrations:
To rejoice the 75th anniversary of Toronto's Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp, which was designed by Heather Lafleur of Gottschalk + Ash International with illustration by Shelagh Armstrong. The stamp highlights a range of livestock, produce, home-made goods and other farm-related wares presented against the backdrop of a packed arena at the Royal Horse Show, Canada's premier international indoor equestrian event.
