One of the most eagerly anticipated college basketball tournaments in the US today is the Progressive Legends Classic Basketball Doubleheader tournament. Often dubbed simply as the Legends Classic, this phenomenal basketball event was first held in 2007. Each year, eight of the best college basketball teams in the US compete against each other for the ultimate prize, which is the Legends Classic Championship. The tournament's final games often take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the current reigning champions are the Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball team. The Legends Classic takes place at the start of the college basketball regular season. Each year, eight teams play against other. From these, four top teams from the best programs in the best athletic conferences then play games as part of a Regional Round at their home courts. After this, they head to Brooklyn in New York City for the final games for the Legends Classic Championship at the Barclays Center. The remaining teams also participate in a round-robin series which is held at one sub-regional site. Each team that plays in the tournament is guaranteed games. The games are telecast live by ESPN.
During the 2013 Legends Classic tournament, the Pittsburg Panthers defeated the Stanford Cardinals 88-67. This year, the Panthers will be the defending champions.
The very first Legends tournament saw the Texas Longhorns win the championship after defeating the Tennessee Volunteers during the final game. D. J. Augustin, a Longhorn, was the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The two other teams that made up the final four in 2007 were the West Virginia Mountaineers and the New Mexico State Aggies. In 2008, the Pittsburg Panthers emerged victorious, after defeating the Washington State Cougars by 57-43.
The 2008 MVP was Panthers player Sam Young, with the other two teams that made it to the finals being Texas Tech and Mississippi State. In 2009, the Florida Gators defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, with Erving Walker winning the MVP Award. Michigan State and UMass made up the final four of the tournament. In 2010, the Syracuse Orange defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 80-76, with Rick Jackson winning the Most Valuable Player Award. The two teams were joined by the UTEP Miners and the Michigan Wolverines at the finals.
In 2011, Vanderbilt won the final game, after defeating Oregon State, with John Jenkins as the MVP. In 2012, Indiana won the tournament, after soundly defeating Georgetown on the arena, with their player Jordan Hulls emerging as the MVP.
