With both teams sharing a common trait, the New York Cosmos and the Tampa Bay Rowdies are all set to face each other on the field in the James Shuart Stadium this year. Both teams are rebirths of their older franchises, and this year, both of them are looking to make history as they head on to play their regular season games.
The New York Cosmos were originally formed in 1970, and played their inaugural game in 1971. They enjoyed a successful run that led them to becoming one of the most formidable teams in the U.S. soccer. Their success led to the legendary Pelé signing on to the roster in 1975. However, their glory was short lived as Pelé retired and soccer became a generally less watched sport in America. However, the team made a comeback in 2010, and is currently on its way to regaining its former glory.
Today, the Cosmos play for the North American Soccer League, which is a Division II League in the United States Soccer Federation. The re-born team played its first game against Manchester United in 2011. In 2013, it rejoined league play as it headed on towards the fall season. The Cosmos emerged winners in the playoffs and came first in the fall season. They also won the Soccer Bowl. As 2014 progresses, the team hopes to repeat the winning streak from last year and play for the big prize.
The roster of the Cosmos boasts of strong management and players. Pelé has come on as an honorary president among others. Giovanni Savarese is the head coach, and the squad includes some of America's finest soccer players such as Carlos Mendes, Hunter Freeman, Peri Marosevic, Jemal Johnson and Jimmy Maurer.
On the other end, the Tampa Bay Rowdies are all set to come back with a bang. Formed in 1975, the Rowdies folded in 1993. 2008 saw them make a comeback and they now play in the North American Soccer League. The new Rowdies played their debut game in 2010 against Crystal Palace Baltimore. Overall, the season ran smoothly despite a few bumps, and landed the team with a Ponce De Leon Cup. The 2011 season was a disappointment, but the 2012 saw the team emerge as Soccer Bowl winners and with overall second position in the league. In 2013, the team struggled a little, but managed to win the Coastal Cup, their fourth year in a row. This year, they are determined to pick their game up.
The Rowdies head on to the field under Ricky Hill as head coach. The roster includes Cody Mizell, Casey Townsend, Lucky Mkosana, Shane Hill, Ryan Thompson, Georgi Hristov and Amani Walker. Past seasons have seen Ricky Hill pick up the Coach of the Year award and Hristov winning the Golden Ball Award. This year, catch them live as they take on the Cosmos.
