What made the think tank of the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks decide to make the jump up to the NCAA Division I was their long and illustrious history in the Division II. They are representatives of the University of Nebraska Omaha. For most of their history they had been a member of the North Central Conference in their previous division. They first joined it way back in the year 1934. They remained a member till 1946. They once again returned in 1976 and it remained that way till 2008 when they left to join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.  In baseball the Mavericks won four conference titles. Golf team had three titles against their name and the soccer side had won another six conference crowns. Starting 1980 till the shift to Division I the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks women's softball program really dominated the sport. In that time period they went on to win the conference an astonishing eleven times. They also won two national championships in 1975 and 2001 to rank among the most successful sides of the current era. They dominated soccer as soon as the 2000's rolled in.

They were one of the most successful sides of the past decade and with six conference and one NCAA title against their name it is not hard to see why that was the case. Swimming and diving teams also put a couple of conference titles in the trophy cabinet. Between 1983 and 2000 Volleyball earned the Mavericks eight titles at the conference levels to go with one NCAA Championship. Four conference titles were also won in Tennis and two on the Tracks. The wrestling program was disbanded when they moved to the current division but it was an incredibly successful program in Division II. The Mavericks had accumulated seven national titles in the sport to solidify their status as one of the most successful in history.
