Mississippi Braves
The Mississippi Braves is a famous baseball team having its base in Pearl of Mississippi. The locals also call them M-Braves. Owned and operated by Liberty Media, (also the owner of the Atlanta Braves) the team is a Class AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Liberty had purchased the Braves from Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting unit in 2007.
Since 1984 The Mississippi Braves was based in Greenville foe where it was known as the Greenville Braves. Due to the condition of Greenville Municipal Stadium as well as a failure to have an agreement with the Greenville County council for a new ballpark, it was decided to move the team from Greenville to Pearl, Mississippi, after the 2004 season.
After the change in name and place, The Mississippi Braves had a first season on April 18, 2005. The team had opened their inaugural season in Trustmark Park before 7,062 fans with a loss against the Montgomery Biscuits. However, the season was far from over. Mississippi proved to be a breeding ground for future Atlanta Braves as 10 Mississippi Braves played in the big leagues during the 2005 season. None of the Mississippi Braves were more prominent than Jeff Francoeur.
Francoeur set career highs in doubles and sacrifice flies through only 84 games in Mississippi. Mississippi mounted a late charge in the first half and finished just two games out of first place. After the loss of so many key contributors, the Braves fizzled in the second half with the season ending prematurely due to Hurricane Katrina. The Braves lost their last seven home games of the inaugural season, but all-in-all it was a successful campaign.
In th 2007 season, the Braves were one of the best in minor league baseball during the first half of the season as they cruised out to a six-game lead in the Southern League South Division standings.
On June 1, 2007, during that night's game against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field, Braves manager, Phillip Wellman, went on a tirade against the umpires. He protested a series of unpopular calls by covering home plate with dirt. Wellman then traced a significantly larger home plate around the actual home plate.
He continued by uprooting bases and throwing them, belly-crawling across the infield and hurling the rosin bag at an umpire as if it were a grenade. Wellman concluded by making a hand gesture that hinted at throwing the third-base umpire out of the game, then blowing a farewell kiss to the crowd while taking a bow. After a moment he waved his fist in salute and then left the stadium.
It was not possible to keep the whole scene out of the eyes of the audiences'. The episode was broadcast on many sports channels all over the United States. This melt down earned him a three-game suspension and worldwide fame on the Internet. Braves manager Bobby Cox, who called Wellman one of his favorite people in the Atlanta organization, said he's seen the clip at least 50 times.
Combining bits of Earl Weaver, Billy Martin and Lou Piniella, the weekend tantrum by Double-A manager Phillip Wellman prompted his bosses at the Atlanta Braves to take action.
In spite of it all, the Mississippi Braves' 2007 season has to be considered the most successful season in team history. The Braves reached the playoffs for the first time in team history. 12 players reached the big leagues and many others were promoted to Richmond to help them win that league's championship. In addition, the Braves drew over 250,000 fans for the first time in team history and set new records in many offensive, defensive, pitching, and running categories.
