Among all of its fourteen varsity teams, Wildcats' men's basketball, football and baseball teams are by far the most successful ones with most number of conference championship wins. Wildcats' very first intercollegiate competition was back when its football team went up against St. Mary's College and defeated them back in 1893. However the football team officially started its play later in 1896 with a match up against Fort Riley, on which it suffered a defeat. Wildcats' football team had a number of shining moments during 1920s and 30s; however its on-field performance saw a major downfall by the late 1980s. But soon enough the tides were turned in the favor of the team after Bill Snyder took charge of the team as its head coach in 1989. The team made it to #1 spot on the national rankings by 1998. And soon after that, the team claimed its first conference title in 2003 since its last one in 1934. So far, the football team has won six conference championships and currently plays its home games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Bill Snyder is still the present head coach of the team, a position that he has held for more than two decades now.
Wildcats' men's basketball team started off its play back in 1902 and since then, the team has enjoyed a long and lustrous time. Over the course of history, Wildcats' Men's basketball team has been a recipient of eighteen Conference Regular Season Championships. Moreover, the team has made it to NCAA tournament final four on four occasions and has been a NCAA tournament Runner up on one occasion as well. The team has also made numerous NCAA Tournament, Sweet Sixteen, and Elite Eight appearances. Amidst its successful run over the years, the team has also kept a stern rivalry with the Kansas Jayhawks that goes by the name of Sunflower Showdown. Apart from men's basketball, Jayhawks and Wildcats also keep a rivalry on the fronts of football, baseball, women's basketball, women's volleyball, women's tennis and rowing. Other than Kansas Jayhawks, Wildcats' football and volleyball teams also keep a heated rivalry with Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Kansas Wildcats' baseball team started its play back in 1897 and claimed its very first championship in 1907. The team plays its home games at the Tointon Family Stadium and made its very first NCAA tournament appearance in 2009. Since that time, the baseball team has made three NCAA appearances. Playing in the Big 12 Conference, the team had its best run in 2008 when Wildcats' finished as the conference runner up. In 1952, the team made an achievement of having the first ever African American player in the Big Seven Conference. In 2013, the team claimed its most recent Big 12 Conference regular season championship. Apart from the recent win in 2013, the team has also claimed three more conference championships prior to that.
