Honduras
Honduras the second largest of the central American countries. Honduras has a small population of about 3.7 million. The country is bordered by three major countries. In the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by el Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua.

Honduras is a democratic republic in Central America. Earlier it was known as Spanish Honduras for the simple reason to be differentiated from the British Honduras (now known as Belize).

The Spanish used at least three different terms to refer to the area that became the Central American country of Honduras. Having a rich multi-ethnic pre history, as defined by the Archaeologists who claimed this of Honduras.

An important part of that prehistory was the Mayan presence around the city of Cop?n in western Honduras, near the Guatemalan border. Short cut to Mayan history can be observed in the famous Mel Gibson movie, Apocolypto, which further defines the Life of Mayan people.

A major Mayan city flourished during the classic period in that area. It has many carved inscriptions The ancient kingdom, existed from the fifth century to the early ninth century, with antecedents going back to at least the second century.

The Mayan civilization began a marked decline in the ninth century, but there is evidence of people still living in and around the city until at least 1200.

By the time the Spanish came to Honduras, the once great city-state of Cop?n was overrun by the jungle, the Lencas, and not the Mayans, were the main Amer-Indian people living in western Honduras.

The fourth and the final voyage to finding the new world, Christopher Columbus reached the Bay Islands on the coast of Honduras. Columbus landed near the modern town of Trujillo neighboring the Guaimoreto Lagoon. When Spanish was discovered, the Honduras also became a part of Spain.

The Honduras was ruled by the Spanish for approximately three centuries. During this time period, an interesting fact was observed, i.e. a clock built was transferred to a cathedral and is now said to be the oldest clock built in the twelfth century.

Spain had granted independence to Honduras. Along with the rest of the Central American provinces.

And in the year 1822, the united American provinces decided to join the newly declared Mexican Empire of Iturbide, which was over thrown a year after the Honduras gained independence and the central America parted from it forming the Federal Republic of Central America which resulted in the states of the American republic becoming independent nations.

Silver mining was a key factor in the Spanish conquest and settlement of Honduras, how ever, it is said to be the only part of the national economy in recent years.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Honduras joined the Allied Nations on a December of the 1990's. A year later, the Honduras signed the declaration of the United nation alond with 25 other Government states.

Honduras has rain forests, cloud forests, mountain ranges with pine and oak trees. In the Bay Islands there are bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, parrot fish, schools of blue tang and whale shark which is has both good and bad consequences for the visitors who tend to visit the Bay Islands to be a part of the soothing sea and cold summers.

The region is considered a biodiversity hotspot due to the numerous plant and animal species that can be found there. Like other countries in the region, Honduras contains vast biological resources that benefit the people.
