Based in the city of Kiel, Schleswig Holstein, Holstein Kiel is one of the most followed and popular football and sports club that is based in Germany. The club was founded back in 7 October 1900, and since then it has been enjoying good amount of fan following and reputation. Holstein Kiel enjoy significant amount of on field success during 1910s and 1920s when they dominated all of the other northern German sports clubs. It was during that time when the team managed to bring home six regional titles, and also finished as runner ups for six more times. The team got a hold of their first and only German title back in 1912, and prior to that win they also earned the title of vice-champions back in 1910. The team also kept on making regular appearances in National Playoffs from time to time. Until the formation of Bundesliga back in 1963, the team kept on being on the first division side. Holstein Kiel was formed back in 1900 following the merger between the two predecessors of Holstein Kiel, Kieler Fußball-Club Holstein and Kieler Fußball-Verein von 1900. It was on 4 May 1902 when the Kieler Fußball-Club Holstein came into existence with that name. The club was, however, renamed somewhere in 1908, to Fußball-Verein Holstein von 1902 (FV Holstein Kiel). Sooner than later, the club caused quite a stir in the regional football scene, and made it to the German Championship for the first time in franchise's history in 1910. In the finals, they met Karlsruher FV and lost to them with the finishing score of 0-1. Holstein Kiel repeated the feat of making it to the German Championship final once again in 1912. Prior to meeting Karlsruher FV in the finals, Holstein defeated Viktoria 89 Berlin in the Semi Finals. As the team progressed to finals, they claimed the championship after sweeping Karlsruher FV with the finishing score of 1-0. The club also saw the addition of new branches in 1914, which were of athletics and hockey.
It was on 7 June 1917 when the present day incarnation of Holstein Kiel came in to being after Sportverein Holstein von 1902 and Kieler Fussball Verein von 1900, were forces to merge with each other after suffering heavily from the aftermath of World War I. Like most of the German Association Football, the present day club uses the foundation date of the original club, as its own.
During its post merger years, the team kept its good performance coming and made several national playoff appearances during the early 1920s. They also made it to the semi finals in 1926; however they weren't lucky enough to come out victorious. Few years later in1930, the team was finally able to make it to the finals where they met Heritha BSC, only to lose with the finishing score of 4-5. During the time of the rule of Third Reich, the team started playing in Gauliga Nordmark, and kept on giving good performance steadily. After the end of World War II, Holstein Kiel remained to be a tier II and III team and played in Oberliga Nord. The reunification of Germany in 1990, made all the teams from East Germany, to become a part of a unified national competition.
