The USA Gymnastics National Championships began in 1963. However before 1971, the national governing body in America was the Amateur Athletic Union which meant that the USA Gymnastics became America's national gymnasts' competition after 1971. Its champions before 1971 aren't accredited as being national champions. Before 1987, the annual gymnastics competition was called the USA Gymnastics after which its name was changed as per the sponsors. The winner of the last USA Gymnastics event include men's AA Champion, Tim Daggett and women' AA Champion, Jennifer Sey. From 1987 to 1988, the USA Gymnastics was named McDonald's US Gymnastics Championship. In 1992, it was called Phar-Mor US Gymnastics Championships. From 1993 till 1996, it became Coca-Cola National Championships. Then from 1997 till 2000, it went by the name John Hancock US Gymnastics Championships. From 2004 till 2012, VISA was the official sponsor of the competition (VISA Championships) and recently, Procter & Gamble have taken over as the sponsors.
