Competing from Division I, the athletic teams of Georgia Southern Eagles represent the Georgia Southern University. The Eagles played their games in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) until 2013. Beginning 2014, they started playing their games in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Associated members of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference, the Eagles will move to Sun Belt Conference by mid-2014. Winner of six FCS 'national championships', Georgia Southern Eagles stand as the only team in the nation with such a record. The nickname of the team prevailed as 'Blue Tide' for the period 1924-1941. After World War II, the athletic teams were called 'the Professors'. The name 'Eagles' came up when a student vote was held to determine the new mascot. The Eagle was elected as the mascot.
Representing North Carolina State University, the NC State Wolfpack are the athletic teams competing as a member of National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wolfpack plays from the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Since the 1953-54 seasons, the teams have been competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference for all the sports. Founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, NC State has won eight 'national championships'. The victories include two AIAW championships, two NCAA championships and four titles that were sanctioned under other bodies. Prior to the nickname Wolfpack, the team was usually referred to as the Techs, Farmers, the Aggies and the Red Terrors. In 1921, a disgruntled fan referred to the players "as unruly as a pack of wolves", that is when the name Wolfpack was adopted.
