As members of baseball's minor league, they have are affiliated with major league's San Francisco Giants. The first the sport was played in Fresno was well over a century ago in 1898. In 1906 a Pacific League Coast League team named Tacoma Tigers made their way to Fresno but that stay lasted for a year only before the side re-located to Sacramento. The MLB expansion of 1998 paved the way for the inception of the Fresno Grizzlies.  Phoenix, Arizona got their long awaited seal of approval from the MBL to start their own baseball franchise. The Phoenix Firebirds were the Giants Triple A affiliates during hose days but since the city now had its own team they affiliated themselves with the newly formed Arizona Diamondback. The Tucson Toros then moved to Fresno to become the Fresno Grizzlies.
 
The San Francisco Giants had their new affiliate and the Fresno Grizzlies became the city's new team. The first season proved to be a very successful one for the franchise as they made their mark by capturing the division title. The playoffs proved a step too far but by getting their hands on the division crown they had made their intentions known in style. During those early days the Grizzlies played their home games at the Pete Beiden Field before moving to the Chukchansi Park four years later.
