He at once announced his plans to convert Joe Robbie Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, from a football-only stadium into a multipurpose stadium.

The renovation cost only $100 million, largely because Dolphins founder Joe Robbie had anticipated that baseball would eventually come to South Florida and built the stadium with a wider field than is normally the case for the NFL. Huizenga also marketed and got a waiver from ESPN and MLB. The Marlins have a schedule of nearly all of their games during the summer months at night due to South Florida's hot and humid summers.

The Marlins' has a manager Rene Lachemann, as their first one. He was a former catcher who had previously managed the Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers. The team had drafted its initial lineup of players in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft. The Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 12-8 in their inaugural Spring Training game in the year of 1992.
