A similar golf tournament which was held in 1945 and 1946 was the prelude to St. Jude Classic golf tournament, held at Chicksaw Country Club. The golf tournament which started in 1958 went through a number of name changes before reaching its current name, FedEx St. Jude Classic. The tournament started with the name Memphis Open in 1958, being held at the Colonial Country Club. In 1969, the name of the tournament was changed to Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, a name after the charity work of the actor, Danny Thomas. In 1986, Federal Express became the major sponsors of the tournament. The tournament also changed its venue from the Colonial Country Club to TPC at Southewind in 1989. The sponsors of the tournament changed from FedEx to Stanford Financial Group but changed back top FedEx in 2011.
Established in 1988, Tournament Players Club Southwind is an 18 hole golf course spread over 7,244 yards and designed by Ron Prichard. According to the rankings of 2009, hole 18 was regarded as the most difficult hole while hole 16 to be the most easiest. Renovations to the course were made in 2004 and TPC Southwind is now amongst the most popular golf courses in the country. Interesting to note is that, TPC Southwind was a dairy farm before it was turned into a golf course and it still has the grain silo and the windmill that was here while it was a dairy farm.
