Emerald Bowl
Originated as the San Francisco Bowl which held its first game on Dec. 31, 2002, the Emerald Bowl is a post-season college football game certified by the NCAA that has been played in San Francisco, California, since 2002.

It was established by Giants Enterprises, an entity organized by the San Francisco Giants baseball team to develop non-baseball uses for SBC Park. Diamond Walnuts became a title sponsor. In 2004, the name was changed to the Emerald Bowl, reflecting the name of the company's Emerald Nuts snack brand. It matches a Mountain West team against a Big East team, Notre Dame, or a service academy.

Set for December 27, the 2006 Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park will match the Pac-10 against the ACC, which could result in a game between Oregon, USC, California or Washington and Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida State, Boston College or Miami. AT&T Park is a great place to watch a college football bowl game. Set right on the San Francisco Bay, the stadium is smaller than many football venues and allows spectators to have a great view and be right on top of the action.

In its short four-year history, the Emerald Bowl (formerly called the San Francisco Bowl) has attracted teams like Virginia Tech, Utah, Georgia Tech and Air Force. In 2004, the bowl produced what later turned out to be a record-setting drive. In the third quarter, Navy, with a 31-19 lead, successfully forced New Mexico into a three-and-out, culminating a goal-line stand. Taking over on offense, the Midshipmen then executed a drive that encompassed 26 plays, 94 yards, and 14 minutes and 26 seconds of the game clock, stretching well into the fourth quarter. The NCAA later confirmed that the drive was historic, setting records for the number of plays in a drive and time of possession in a drive. In 2005 Utah stunned Georgia Tech with 550 yards of total offense and a record 16 catches for 214 yards and four touchdowns from WR Travis LaTendresse, with three of the scores helping the Utes to a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter. Georgia Tech's offense got back in the game at the end of the first half with a 31-yard touchdown catch from George Cooper and a 29-yard field goal from Travis Bell, but that was it. Utah put it away with a 41-yard touchdown run from Quinton Ganther.

In addition to giving fans a reason to celebrate, bowls provide participating schools and host communities something to cheer about. This year, 28 bowl games will distribute nearly $200 million to NCAA schools. More than $1.1 billion has been paid out to NCAA schools participating in bowl games in the past 10 years, and bowls will conservatively contribute more than $1.9 billion over the next ten years.

Collectively, bowl games generate an estimated $875 million worth of economic impact and exposure to their host communities each year, and many bowl games contribute in excess of $100,000 annually to charitable causes and host camps for disadvantaged youth
