Part of the third division of the American Soccer Pyramid, both the Dayton Dutch Lions and the Orlando City Soccer Club are coming together this fall, to face each other on the field. Both teams play for the USL Pro Division of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), and this year, they are all set to put their best foot forward. The American Soccer League System currently comprises of three divisions, and interdivision movement is based on merit. The showdown between the two teams could possibly tip the balance in the favor of either team jumping their divisions.
The Dayton Dutch Lions was founded in 2009, and played its inaugural season in 2010. Ever since then, it has been a strong team in the USL Pro Division. In its first year, the team was ranked at number three in its League. It finished with a winning percentage and ended up in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. 2011 saw the team enter into a dull season where it did not maintain the winning streak from the first season. 2013 saw the team reach the Quarter Finals of the Playoffs and enter the third round of the Open Cup.
This year, Head Coach, Sid van Druenen is confident that his boys will be able to pull a winning season. The roster includes young talent such as Thomas Garner, Brock Granger, Joel DeLass, Jackson Beckham De Silva, Bradley Stuver, Cameron Vickers, Ross Friedman and Yannick Smith. Both DeLass and Garner are top scorers for the team, and this year they are determined to pull yet another spectacular performance.
On the other side, Orlando City is ready to head on to the pitch to sweep yet another pitch. Orlando City is currently one of the most talked about clubs in the USL Pro Division. It is all set to jump from the third to the first division in USSF as it prepares to join Major League Soccer in 2015. This year, playing its last season as a USL Pro team, the squad is determined to finish on top and close with a win.
Over the years, Orlando City has had a spectacular run in USL Pro. It debuted in 2011, and while it placed only third in the U.S. Open Cup, it managed to win the regular season and emerged as champions of the Playoffs. 2012 saw the second season of the team play out just as successfully as the first, with the team bagging the first place in the regular season yet again. However, this time, they could not make it to the Semi-Finals. The team headed towards its third season in 2013, and won yet another Playoff. Currently, they head into the 2014 season as defending champions and many are hopeful that the team will be able to retain its glory as it plays out its last season in the Division.
