Cote d'Ivoire is also known for winning the two highest scoring penalty shoot outs in international football competitions. One was in the 1992 African Cup of Nations when the team defeated Ghana while the other one was in the quarter-final match of 2006 African Cup of Nations when they had a victory over Cameroon.

Cote d'Ivoire ended the year 2013 as Africa's best ranked team according to the FIFA rankings. It started the year as being on the top of the continental rankings. Throughout the year, the team didn't let the position fall even once and maintained it till the end qualifying as Africa's only team in the Top 20 for the FIFA World Cup.

The team owes much of its success to Didier Drogba who is the current captain and the all time top scorer of the side. He helped the team in qualifying for each of the World Cups by displaying his exceptional goal scoring abilities. Owing to his talent he was named the "African Footballer of the Year" in 2009.
