Central Connecticut Blue Devils’ football team is among its oldest and most prestigious athletic programs. The very first Blue Devils’ football team was fielded back in 1935 and currently plays its home games at the Arute Field in New Britain, Connecticut. As the members of Northeast Conference, the team competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA Division I. Connecticut claimed its very first Northeast Conference Championship back in 2004 and since then, the team has claimed three more conference championships. The most recent Conference championship came to the team back in 2010. Central Connecticut Blue Devils football team keeps a fierce rivalry with Sacred Heart Pioneers, known as the Constitution State Rivalry. Since both the schools are located in Connecticut and play as the members of Northeast Conference, the two always end up in a heated football fixture. So far, the two teams have gone toe to toe with each other on fifteen occasions, with Central Connecticut Blue Devils being in the lead with the score of 9-6. Both the teams met for the very first time on the football field on October 24, 1988 where Central Connecticut Blue Devils claimed the very first win.
Central Connecticut Blue Devils’ Men’s Basketball team is also among its prestigious athletic teams. The team plays its home games at the William H. Detrick Gymnasium which has the capacity of packing 3,200 fans in attendance. The team has been playing under the leadership of the head coach Howie Dickenman for past eighteen years and has made a total of three NCAA Tournament appearances since then. Blue Devils’ Men’s Basketball team also has three conference regular season championships to its name as well as three Conference tournament championships. Blue Devils’ 2013-14 season will mark its 77th season. The team fielded for the very first time back in 1934 under the leadership of the head coach Harrison J. Kaiser. Blue Devils made it to the rank of the NCAA Division I in the 1986-87 season. Prior to that, the team played in NCAA Division II for six seasons and for twenty nine seasons in NAIB/NAIA. The team has been playing its home games at the Detrick Gymnasium since 1965 and before that it played at the Memorial Hall and at Teachers Gymnasium.
Other Central Connecticut athletic facilities includes Michael S. Knapp Weight Training Center, Softball Field, Balf Savin Baseball Field, Jack Suydam Natatorium, Stanley Golf Course, Central Connecticut Soccer Field and Stanley Quarter Park.
