Connecticut has many reasons to be proud of, be it for its rich history, notable personalities that it has produced or its incredible sports teams. The state especially stands tall because of its support to the 'big four sports leagues'. Sports is a passion for the people of Connecticut and this is why even games played at collegiate level are taken seriously and see huge crowd attendance. University of Connecticut has been around since 1881 and has a superb athletics program. The athletes that represent the university are called Connecticut Huskies and sometimes also go by the name 'UConn Huskies'. The Huskies are involved in twenty varsity sports and play in Division I as well as for the Big East Conference. No matter which sport is being played, the support for the teams is ample. This is why Connecticut Huskies tickets for all its games sell out fast.
The Connecticut Huskies are actively involved in all the major sports and have over the years produced some outstanding players. The athletes rank high in baseball, football, men and women's basketball, field hockey and track & field. The athletics department provides latest facilities and separate arenas are constructed for each sport.
The Connecticut Huskies baseball team plays at the J. O. Christian Field, located in Storrs. Equipped with the state of the art amenities, the stadium has a capacity to accommodate as many as 2,000 people. The capacity often falls short as Huskies' fan following is huge and they all flock to see the players in live action. 2010 was one of the most successful years for the UConn Huskies as they passed their earlier mark of 39-game win and set a new record of 48 victories.
The Huskies basketball team has brought home glory for the supporters several times. Men's basketball team has won three national titles, in 1999, 2004 and the latest one in 2011. The athletes play their home games at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, XL Center which can host more than 16,000 people. Many former Connecticut Huskies players have made it to the NBA and those who are still playing include, among others, Jeff Adrien, Ray Allen who is a shooting guard for Miami Heat and Jerome Dyson who is listed with New Orleans Hornets.
Huskies women's basketball team is also not behind and has seven national wins. Connecticut Huskies appeared on Sports Illustrated list of 'Team of the Decade' from 2000 - 2009 and was ranked at number three. UConn football team has many feathers in its cap and so far won 26 Conference titles. The team's home ground is Rentschler Field and it can accommodate up to 40,000 fans.
