Due to the ongoing World War II there were no games during the mid 40s. Of the 10 championships held, Costa Rica was the breakaway leader with seven wins. El Salvador, Haiti and Panama won the remaining three. In comparison, the NACF was able to hold only four championships, with the last two coming after a gap of four decades in 1990 and 1991. Regional powerhouse Mexico won three of these with Canada winning the last one, and also their first major trophy in over a hundred years, before the introduction of the Gold Cup.
After the creation of the CONCACAF with the merging of the three regions in 1961, the title was unified instead of two separate championships. It would be another two years before the premier of the competition would be held in 1963. El Salvador was the country chosen to host the inaugural championship. The event was held every two years on a rotation basis with regards to which country would host the event. During the early part of the event, only six countries participated in the competition. The games were played on the basis of round robin with each team playing all the other five times. In 1973, an added incentive was included which was that the champion team would represent the CONCACAF region in the FIFA World Cup Finals. The first country to profit from this was Haiti which shocked the fans when they won the tournament and secured a place for themselves in the 1974 FIFA World Cup Finals held in West Germany. In the following editions of the competition, the teams that won the title and made it to the big stage included Mexico, Honduras, Canada and Costa Rica.
