The collective athletic teams of the Ivy League, Columbia University are called the Columbia University Lions most commonly known as Columbia Lions. M. Dainne Murphy is presently the director of the Columbia Lions. Columbia Lions are one of the finest athletic teams amongst the other eight Ivy athletic league institutions. The chant "Roar, Lion, Roar" truly represents the enthusiasm and fighting spirit of the Columbia Lions.
In 1754, the famous Columbia University came into existence and over the years has grown to host 29 co-ed male and female teams. The first sports team of the Columbia University was its baseball team founded in 1867 followed by the formation of a football team in 1870. In the early years one of the university's best sports was Men's Rowing. The Men's Rowing team won the Columbia College Boat Club at the Henley Royal Regatta race in 1978. Also, one of the oldest nation's wrestling team is the Lions. In 1939 Columbia University held the first televised sporting event.
The Columbia Lions has men's teams for sports like; Baseball, Basketball, Football, Tennis, Swimming and Diving, Golf, Fencing, Wrestling, Track and Field, Lightweight Rowing, Heavyweight Rowing, Cross Country, Soccer and Lacrosse.  While the females also have teams for various sports like Archery, Fencing, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Women's Rowing, Women's Soccer, Softball, Women's Golf, Lacrosse, Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Tennis, Women's Basketball, Cross Country and Track and Field.
A lot of notable athletes have been nurtured by the Columbia Lions. Some of these famous men in the field of baseball are Lou Gehrig, Eddie Collins, Chris Gomez and Gene Larkin. In the field of football Sid Luckman, Paul Governali and Marcellus Wiley amongst others have grown to become popular players.
Lion's soccer team is one of its most successful teams. Its success history is spread over three centuries. In 2006 the Women Soccer team won the Ivy League championship. The women's cross country team has won the Heptagonal Ivy League Championships consecutively in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. The Lions football team had a struggling beginning but over the years has grown to become a powerful team. In the 20^th century it has been performing at its best. It has won one national title as yet. The Lions men's basketball team was won one Ivy League championship.  Other sports like swimming and diving, tennis, rowing and track and field also have many records for both the male and female teams.
Like the history of the college itself, its sport teams have earned a lot of success and fame over the years.
