Two fascinating universities and their sports teams will face each other on the field in the upcoming game. These are teams from Clemson University, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Western Carolina University, a member of the Southern Conference. Both universities are members of the NCAA Division I, home to the best athletics programs in the nation. The team has also won an NCAA National Championship and has been ranked number one on the nation by the AP poll and the Coaches poll. More recently, the team won the Humanitarian Bowl in 2001, the Peach Bowl in 2004, the Champ Sports Bowl in 2005, the Music City Bowl in 2009, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in 2012 and the Orange Bowl in 2014. Facing them in the upcoming game are teams fielded by the Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, North Carolina. The Catamounts are members of the Southern Conference and play in the NCAA Division I FCS.
The Catamounts' athletic director is Randy Eaton, who oversees the sixteen or so teams fielded by the university. The teams play their home games at E.J. Whitmire Stadium, the Ramsey Center and the Hennon Stadium. Paws is their official mascot and they have won eleven Conference championships in baseball, one in men's basketball, three in women's basketball, one in softball, three in volleyball, three in women's soccer, ten in men's track & field and thirteen in women's track & field.
