Chicago Sky competes in the Eastern Conference of the Women's National Basketball Association(WNBA). Owned by Michael J. Alter and Margaret Stender, the team surfaces as a basketball franchise in 2005, just before the 2006 WNBA season started. During their first active season, the Sky managed to win five games. The number in comparison to other teams was quite low, but for a new team it was a good start. Struggling through their earlier years, the team added a milestone to their history in 2013 when the clinched their first playoff berth.
Their victory in 2013 WNBA season was a pivotal point for the Sky's. The selection of players made during the 2013 WNBA Draft paid off well. The high hopes that the Sky had with Elena Delle Donne and Brooklyn Pope turned out to be overwhelming. Delle Done scored a regular season record of 24-10 and became the "first lead rookie" for the All-Star voting. With such a score she managed to finish first in the Eastern Conference. Together Fowles,Delle Donna and team member Swin Cash won numerous honors and titles including Peak Performer in Rebounds, Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Missing the MVP Award by a close margin, Delle Donne managed to be named as the All-WNBA second team whereas Fowles managed to stand first.
Competing in the Western Conference, Tulsa Shock is a member of the WNBA. The Shock emerged as basketball team in 1998 in Detroit, just before the beginning of 1998 WNBA season. At that time, they were known as "Detroit Shock." During their first active season, the team was able to successfully win seventeen games. Before the commencement of 2010 season, the Shock relocated to Tulsa. They changed their name to the present one after the move. Presently, Tulsa Pro Hoops LLC owns the team which is run by David Box and Bill Cameron.
The Shock's move to Tulsa turned out to be slower than expected. Since their relocation they have not qualified for the WNBA Playoffs but they still have the determination and high spirits. Over the years, the Shocks have had several quality players including Katie Smith who is women's professional basketball all-time leading scorer, Deanna Nolan who is a known athletic shooting guard, Liz Cambage a young Australian center and more.
