Few teams in the NBA have the tumultuous history that the Charlotte Hornets boast. The team started out initially in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets. The team was a big deal at the time, as getting a franchise to the city of Charlotte was a massive task that required a lot of investment. The main thing that led to the creation of the franchise was the Charlotte Coliseum. The Coliseum was a 25,000 capacity basketball arena, the first of its kind at the time. It was the first ever arena to be built specifically for basketball and it's what eventually led to the city of Charlotte getting its own NBA franchise.

The team's name is owed to the city's history of being called a hornet's nest for invaders and even though it enjoyed a lot of popularity amongst fans, people never believed an NBA franchise would be financially successful in the city. Everyone was proving wrong when the massive Charlotte Coliseum became the first ever basketball arena to host 364 consecutive sold-out games over 9 seasons. Every game that was played at the arena from 1988 - 2004 was sold out. That is easily the most impressive record especially considering that the Hornets have never won a title in the NBA. The team also gained popularity initially for the use of the color teal in their uniform. That and putting stripes on the kit were a first for the NBA and soon a fashion trend was born with a number of teams opting for stripes and teal colored kits.

In 2001-2002, the team relocated to New Orleans to become the New Orleans Hornets and Charlotte was awarded another expansion franchise. The team was reborn as the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004, playing a few more of their games at the Coliseum before moving to the newly constructed Time Warner Arena in 2005. This arena boasts a number of impressive features, including the largest TV screen in any indoor arena and a 20,000 capacity for basketball games.

Fans dubbed the arena as The Hive when the team was once again re-branded. This time it was in 2013-2014 that the New Orleans Hornets decided that they were going to change their name. This meant that the Bobcats not only got back the Hornet name but also retained the history of the team before it became the Bobcats in 2002. Now led by owner Michael Jordan who acquired the team in 2010, the newly christened Charlotte Hornets finally had their real name back and they were starting to look dominating on the field.

With a change in coaching and management staff, the future looks bright for the team. The Charlotte Ladycats, now known as the Charlotte Honeybees, take to the middle of the arena during every match and the sea of teal, purple, gray and black chants and sings with them as they urge their team on. That is one of the beautiful things about the city of Charlotte. Even though they team hasn't had the best win record, people still continue to sell out each home game and thousands of fans travel with their team as they go around playing their games all over the country.

Current coach Steve Clifford has a loss/win ratio of exactly .500 so the fans are looking at him to tilt the scale in their advantage. Led from the front by captain and leading point scorer Al Jefferson, Charlotte Hornets have now become a force to reckon with and look to leave an impact on the NBA this season. Whether you're looking to watch every game they play or just want to catch the action when they visit your city, make sure you get your Charlotte Hornets tickets in time.
