The inaugural season of the Charleston Classic was held in 2008. Teams competing in the tournament included Western Michigan Broncos, TCU Horned Frogs, Hofstra Pride, Clemson Tigers, East Tennessee State University, Temple Owls, Charleston Cougars and SIU Edwardsville Cougars. The Clemson managed to defeat the Temple in a thrilling final, bagging the first ‘Charleston Classic Championship’. The most recent champions are the Colorado Buffaloes, who defeated the Murray State Racers in 2012 season. Leading the Buffaloes were Andre Roberson and Askia Booker. Andre Roberson scored nine rebounds and sixteen points in the tournament whereas Askia Booker set a new career-high score with twenty three points, eventually winning the ‘MVP Honor’.
One of the oldest college basketball teams, the Colorado Buffaloes was initially formed as Silver and Gold in 1901. Since then the team has evolved over the years and is currently a part of the NCAA Division I. The Buffaloes play in the Pacific 12 Conference. The team has made twelve appearances in the NCAA Tournament and has managed to rank in ‘Elite Eight’ as well as ‘Final Four’ several times. The Buffaloes were crowned the ‘Pac-12 Conference Champions’ during the 2012 season. The team uses silver, black and gold as its traditional colors. Representing the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Buffaloes currently comprise exceptionally talented players such as Chris Jenkins, Wesley Gordon, Spencer Dinwiddie, Sabatino Chen and Jeremy Adams.
The Charleston Classic is held at the TD Arena every year. Boasting a capacity of over five thousand seats, the TD Arena opened to the public in November 2008.
