Even though the New Britain Rock Cats came into existence in 1983, the team's history can be traced all the way back to 1965. During its early days in New Britain, the franchise went by the name of the New Britain Red Sox and called the Beehive Field their home field.
The 1983 the Eastern League season marked the Rock Cats' inaugural season and they emerged as the leading force in the league. The team finished its regular season in fourth spot and advanced to the playoffs. In the Eastern League Championship finals, they defeated the Lynn Sailors to claim their very first league championship. The Rock Cats' second league title came in 2001, when the Reading Phillies shared the title with them.
The New Britain Rock Cats enjoy massive fan support within the region and in 2008 the team set a franchise record for attracting 8,115 fans. The attendance record was broken by the Rock Cats in later years several times until it was set to 8,633 fans during an All-Star game that took place on July 10, 2013.
The Bowie Baysox came into existence in 1993, although the team's earlier history can be traced back to 1989 when it went by the name of the Hagerstown Suns. After being founded, the Baysox played their home games at various stadiums during the first two seasons until their home ground opened doors on June 16, 2004.
After facing tough times during their initial few seasons, the Baysox made it back to the playoffs in 1997 and earned national prominence thanks to their outstanding attendance records. However, the Baysox's losing streak continued during the late 90s to early 2000s. After coming extremely close to making a postseason appearance in 2005, the Baysox finally won their first major title by lifting their first and only division championship in 2008.
