The most famous games in the world are simple to play and fairly easy to understand. That tends to be the reason for their popularity. On the other hand, some sports are more obscure and tend to attract the people looking for a more technical or extreme experience through their sport. If that does nothing to wet the appetites of these thrill seekers, we have a mixture of games.

A Biathlon is usually a mixture of two sports into one. This format of sport makes sure that no one gets bored as two games are being played at once and the action is so fast with so much happening all the time that you would miss something if you blinked. The most popular and widely played Biathlon event is the skiing and shooting event. This event seamlessly combines shooting and skiing to create a unique sport that is watched by people all over the world.

The Biathlon can find its roots back in Norway around 1861. The sport was used as a training exercise for the Norwegian army. Due to its eccentric nature, the sport found quick fame and became a much loved training exercise in addition to a sport that would be enjoyed by everyone else. After being included in the Winter Olympics in 1924 as 'military patrol' the sport gained more popularity in the 1950's when it was introduced into other European countries.

The sport consists of the skiers skiing down a track in a number of laps. They have a rifle mounted on their backs and ammo is loaded onto their belts. The goal is to get the shortest time on the clock. The skiers start out racing and there is a shooting range at the end of every lap. The ranges could either be standing or prone position shooting ranges depending on the type of race. There is a penalty for every shot missed which also depends on the type of race. These penalties include a 150metre penalty run, a minute added to your time and having to finish up the shots with extra ammo. All these penalties basically add time to your racing time meaning that the main scoring method and the determinant of the winner is actually the race time.

Special bore rifles are used for the modern skiing event while normal skis are allowed. The skiers are not allowed any other equipment than normal skis and poles. As the event is now broadcast on television, the scoring system has to be in real time. For this purpose, the targets are now fitted with censors that can detect if and where they have been hit and will change color upon being hit to inform the spectators and the judges of the result straight away. The course that is raced on is usually a pretty simple ski course and most of the competitors in Biathlons are cross-country skiers.

There are six types of Biathlon events in total. The individual event is the oldest type of Biathlon and consists of a simple race with the shooting intervals. The sprint is very similar with just a difference of number of laps and length. The pursuit race is much more exciting with the skiers starting at varying times and having to pursue each other throughout the race. The mass start is where all the skiers start at the same time; the competitors for this race are selective as a large number of skiers on the same track would be a risky venture. The final type of race is the relay event, this is a team event and the competitors change hands during laps.

Apart from being part of the Olympics, the sport is governed by the International Biathlon Union. This association is responsible for the governance of the rules and organizes the World Cup and World Championships of the sports. The latter being a series that takes place over a whole winter season, with a points system determining the winner.

The Biathlon is a special type of sport. The action is so fast that it will always keep you on the edge of your seat. With the winter season now coming up along with the start of the Winter Olympics, this is your big chance to catch an exciting Biathlon event this year.
