Australian Open
Australian Open is the first Grand Slam even held on the Tennis calendar which is followed by the French Open. It held annually at the Melbourne Park in January. The tournament was inaugurated in the year 1905.
Initially the event was known as the Australasian Championships, but after 1926 the event was known as the Australian Championships. The event originally was placed on the grass courts of Kooyong before it was moved to the Melbourne Park.
This move was made just to save the event from fading away, so as to revive the event it was moved to Melbourne Park which was formerly known as the Flinders Park, which offered a new Rebound Ace hardcourt.
The tournament like all other grand slam events features both men's and women's singles event as well as men's and women's doubles event along with mixed doubles events. The tournament holds both junior and master competitions. Before the event was moved to January in 1987, it was held in December every year from 1977 till 1985.
The tournament is held on the two courts with retractable roofs, namely Rod Laver Arena and Vodafone Arena, which makes Australian Open the only Grand Slam event that is held indoors, as the roof can be shut in case of extreme heat or rain.
However by 2009, Wimbledon's center court is also scheduled to have retractable roof, which will make Wimbledon the second grand slam event to be held in an indoor court.
Australian Open is held every year during the summer season in Australia, and during which if the heat or the humidity reach the dangerous levels the extreme heat policy comes into the play.
Since it's the first event of the tennis, Australian open usually attracts large number of viewers, which is why this year Australian Open made a record for achieving highest ever day/night attendance record for any Grand Slam tournament after attracting 62,885 fans.
For the past 20 years the tournament was played on Rebound Ace hardcourt, however this year its place was taken by cushioned acrylic surface called Plexicushion. Due to the Plexicushion, there is now less retention of heat as well as the better consistency.
This year the Australian Open was held from 14 January till 27 January 2008, while the winners of men's and women's singles titles were Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova respectively.
The event is managed by the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, which is currently known as the Tennis Australia. In 1905 the event was played for the first time in Warehouseman's Cricket Ground in Melbourne.
At that time the event was known as The Australasian Championships. The change of name took place in 1927 and from then onwards it started to be known as the Australian Championships, the ultimate renaming took place in 1969, and since then it is known as the Australian Open.
Apart from being staged in Melbourne the event is also hosted in several other cities in Australia including: Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, New Zealand, Christchurch and Hastings.
