Atletico de Madrid came into existence on 26^th April, 1903. The club was not incepted as a proper separate entity rather it was designed to act as youth development arm of another of "Athletic Bilbao." The team added to its reputation by winning the "Copa del Rey" in successive years of 1960 and 1961.

Next year saw Atletico de Madrid won its first international trophy by lifting the "Cup Winners Cup." Atletico next won the La Liga in the year 1966 and then continued that run to capture three more league titles in 1970, 1970 and then again in 1977. Atletico had only one Copa del Rey triumph to show for in the 1980's. The team got back to winning ways once again by winning one La Liga title and three Copa del Rey's in the 1990's.

Atletico suffered relegation at the turn of the century but didn't take too long to bounce back. The club hasn't done much domestically since its return but in Europe the team has gone on to add two "Europa League" titles and two "UEFA Super Cups" to the trophy cabinet.
