Club America and Club Leon are two Mexican football clubs both of which participate from Liga MX and are soon to play in the upcoming America vs. Leon game. Though Leon won the championship, America came close to winning by taking the first place in the General Table. Club America was founded in 1916 and is among the four football clubs under the ownership of the media company Groupo Televisa. Their best players include the likes of Hector Miguel Zelada, Pedro Najero, Carlos Reinoso, and Enrique Borja, among others.

Club Leon was formed in 1944 and is currently based in Leon City in the Guanajuato state. Since 1967, the team has been playing its home games at Estadio Leon that has a seating capacity of more than twenty-eight thousand. Leon has won six division titles between 1948 and 1992, and only recently conquered its first Apertura championship. The team is ranked as the twentieth century's twenty-ninth best club in North America as well as in the IFFHS Central. In 1993, the team was a runner-up for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup but lost the final game against Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa. This was one of the most upsetting defeats in the team's history.

Leon has been consistently contending for the title of Primera Division A since its relegation from the Division in 2002. Leon was unable to get the promotion because of mediocre performance in playoffs even after playing quite well during regular season. The team finally attained its promotion to the Primera Division as a result of the 2012 Clausura Tournament, in which it defeated Correcaminos.
