Acura Classic
In affiliation with Professional Tennis Tournament for women, WTA tour Acura Classic was held annually at The La Costa Resort and Spa in California. As a Tier I tournament it was induced on the WTA tour in 2004.
That affialiation lasted till 2007. Originally as Ginny of San Diego, event was formed by Raquel Giscafre in 1984. Before the event was ceased, Jane Stratton also acquired the co-ownership of the tournament from 1986.
Since its creation, event was sponsored by many sponsors and some of them include Great American Bank, Toshiba, and Mazda. As soon as the tournament attained a Tier I status, it started attracting some of the major names in Women's Tennis and became an important warm up tournament prior to US open.
Tournament has been won by six players, more than once. Some of the winners of the tournament include Jennifer Capriati, Steffi Graf, Justin Henin, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams.
Most of wins at the tournaments are scored by Steffi Graf. Four players were able to grab consecutive wins in the tournament and Venus Williams holds the record for most consecutive wins.
The event was played for the last time in 2007, and during its final play Maria Sharapova was able to pull of a victory in final Singles events. However the doubles event was won by the duo Liezel Huber and Cara Black.
Women's Tennis Association or WTA was formed in 1973, and since then it is the principle body that holds Professional Women's tennis competitions all across the globe.
The world tour for Professional Women's Tennis is also organized by WTA and is known as the WTA tour. At the end of ever regular season WTA tour Championship is held amongst the top ranked tennis players on the WTA tour.
Sponsored for the first time by Virginia Slims, the tour was held for the first time in Houston, Texas in August 1971. The only thing different about this first championship was that it was held before the end of the regular season.
The following year, the event was staged in Boca Raton, Florida at the end of the regular season. Except its inaugural year, the event was held in October till 1974, however later in 1975 it was moved to March and kept on hold it on March till 1986.
However after that the event was moved to the end of the year as WTA decided to hold the regular season from January till November.
The WTA tour Championship changed its venue as it was moved to Madison Square Garden, New York in 1977. The following year, just for one year, the event moved to Oakland, California and after that event was constantly held at Madison Square Garden till 2000.
In 2001 the event went across the borders as it was held in Munich, Germany and later in 2002 it moved back to Los Angeles, California where it stayed till 2005. For next two years, 2006 and 2007, the event was held in Madrid, Spain, while in 2008, 2009 and 2010 the event will be held at Doha Qatar.
