Modern day TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was founded in 1945, at the merger of football club Fubballverein Hoffenheim and gymnastics club Turnverein Hoffenheim. At the start of the Nineties, they were an unknown local amateur side participating in Baden-Wurttemberg's eighth division. They improved steadily such that by 1966, the club was participating in Verbandsliga Nordbaden. Around year 2000, their alumnus Dietmar Hopp came back to his youth time club as its financial banker. He was also known as the co-founder of firm SAP and brought in some of his assets to the club. These contributions almost gave immediate benefits; in 2000 the team completed Verbandsliga as its top member and received a promotion to the fourth-division called Oberliga Baden-Wurtemberg. After they won their next first position, the club was moved further up to Regionalliga Sud in the 2001-02 season. They finished their first season in the thirteenth place in Regionalliga, and the following year rose up by the leaps to take the fifth spot.
The team's first season of professional football came in 2007-08, when after a slow beginning that included three losses alongside a draw in the initial four games, the club's performance got better suddenly such that they jumped from the sixteenth place to the second within twenty matchdays.
The club came fifth and seventh in the next couple of seasons, after which it moved up to the fourth position in 2005-06 season, earning their best score to date. They made their first appearance in the German Cup and played well, moving into the quarterfinals. Their players have been spotted among the best in the world. Their current squad includes the likes of Tim Wiese, Andreas Beck, Matthias Jaissle, Stefan Thesker, Sebastian Rudy, Boris Vukcevic, Filip Malbasic, Sven Schipplock, Eren Derdiyok, David Abraham, Daniel Williams, Chirs, Matthieu Delpierre, Fabian Johnson, Tobias Weis, Joselu, Jens Grahl, Ahmed Sassi, Patrick Ochs, Roberto Firmino, Sejad Salihovic, Pelle Jensen, Sandro Wiser, Luis Advincula, Michael Gregoritshc, Jannik Vestergaard, Koen Casteels, Kevin Volland, Vincenzo Grifo, Jeremy Toljan, Adnreas Ludwig, Stephan Schrock, Afriyie Acquah, Eugen Polanski, Rubin Szarka, Jonathan Liakos and Patrick Schorr.
