Hutchison is among the six female senators who were elected in 1993, in special elections. She is the first woman in the history of Texas to represent the second largest state of the United States. In 1982, she stood as a candidate to represent the Dallas-based third district at the United States House of Representatives but lost the position to Steve Bartlett. Following this, she left politics and became executive of a bank in Texas. Then she met Ray, who became her second husband and her interest in politics was revived. In 1990, she was elected as the Texas State Treasurer and three years later she became the senator of Texas and stayed in the office until January, 2013.
