A Prairie Home Companion Tickets

Masses have seen quite a few variety shows over the years on stage, radio and television. Quite a few of them did not fare well and interest in them petered out after a while. However, the popular radio variety show 'A Prairie Home Companion (PHC)' has been on air for over thirty five years and has shown no signs of dwindling popularity. Over four million fans tune in for each broadcast and it is transmitted to different countries around the world, including Germany, England and New Zealand.  

The Show

The host and the brain behind the show is Garrison Keillor, who is assisted by a dedicated staff and crew. Together they have worked tirelessly over the years to make this program the international hit it is today. It starts off each time with a rendition of "Tishomingo Blues," a Spencer Williams classic song with lyrics written specially for PHC. The track replaced '"Hello Love" by Hank Snow which had been used prior to the 1987 season.

Being a variety show, it consists of many different sections. Music plays an important part, as the show has featured some of the biggest names in the history of the American folk and country music industry as guests over the years. They have not only performed musical numbers, but have also taken part in comedy sketches and other segments as well.

"News from Lake Wobegon" is one of the most famous segments of the show and it has been a crowd favorite over the years. Lake Wobegon is a fictional hometown created by Keillor, who also came up with names for different places and people in the town. During each episode, Garrison narrates news stories about what is happening in the town in a mostly satirical and humorous way.

The rest of the show contains comedy sketches, parodies of famous people, satirical news features and advertisements from fake sponsors. The PHC also contains a segment in which the host, guests, actors and audience members take turns telling jokes.  

The host

Garrison Keillor has been at the head of this program for its entirety, which is why the show itself is called the "Garrison Keillor's Radio Show" in many other countries. Keillor was born in Minnesota in 1942 and went on to complete his high school and college education in the same state. While completing his Bachelor's degree in English, he started working at a student operated radio station. That is when he decided to make a career in radio broadcasting.

Keillor joined the Minnesota Public Radio in 1969 and started off by hosting 'The Morning Program' from six to nine am. The station called the show 'A Prairie Home Entertainment' at the time and it would prove to be the forerunner to the PHC. After some disagreements, Keillor quit for a few months in 1971, but would return later that year. By 1974, he had managed to rebrand the show and move it to the Saturday evening timeslot. 

Over the years

The first PHC show was held on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at the Macalester College in Saint Paul. Only twelve people attended the first recording, but that did not matter as within a year the show's popularity sky rocketed. Owing to the immense popularity of the program, the management began to broadcast fifty shows a year, taking this unique blend of music and comedy to fans in almost every state in the country.

Today over seven hundred different stations across the world broadcast this legendary show. It is now heading out on tour to celebrate the completion of forty successful years on air.
