Hayward started playing guitar at the age of 15. He initially performed at clubs and various dance halls where his talents evolved. Lannie Donegan signed Hayward for songwriting when he was 17.  Hayward was signed by Mike Pinder and asked to join The Moody Blues in 1966. A number of Hayward's songs have been used by The Moodies as album opening songs after Mike Pinder's departure. Most of the songs were either his solo work or co-written with John Lodge.  The band has sold 60 million albums worldwide since 1978.  The songs from previous albums too had produced tons of hit singles and charted amongst the top 10 many times.

During The Moody Blues hiatus period, Hayward worked with Lodge and producer Tony Clarke. He came up with an album titled 'Blue Jays'. His first solo album was released in 1977. It was titled 'Songwriter' and was commercially successful worldwide. The album contained his evergreen song 'Forever Autumn'.

Hayward began recording for film and television iduring the 1980s. He composed the theme song of Star Cops and Howling IV: The Original Nightmare during this time. He also produced the  music of the animated series 'The Shoe People' and composed 'Eternal Woman' for the film 'She'. He released the album 'Classic Blue' which he produced with arranger Mike Batt. The album was influenced by pop music and even included a cover of 'Stairway to Heaven' which is one of Led Zeppelin's all time hits. Justin was involved with various rock singers in 2003 for an orchestral album titled 'Justin Hayward and Friends Perform the Hits of the Moody Blues'. He went on the stage tour of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of 'The War of the Worlds' and performed in UK and Australia during 2007.

Even after so many years, Hayward still tours with the Moody Blues to perform in  all parts of the world. He has performed at a concert alongside legendary vocalist Bruce Dickinson in 2011 and matched his high flying vocals with his. Hayward's latest album titled 'Spirits of the Western Sky' was released in February 2013.

Hayward usually plays Gibson guitar although he used the Fender Telecaster and 12-String Gibson Acoustic guitars. He enjoys playing the Gibson Les Paul in most of his live shows.
