Cincinnati-based indie punk rock band, Walk the Moon was formed by Missouri native and lead singer Nicholas Petricca in 2008. The group underwent many changes with reference to its members until it finalized its lineup which currently comprises of Petricca as lead vocalist, synthesizer and keyboardist; Eli Maiman as guitarist and vocalist; Kevin Ray as bassist and vocalist; Sean Waugaman as drummer and vocalist. The group takes its name from The Police song Walking On The Moon. They chose to release their debut album titled I Want! I want! independently in 2010, from which their song Anna Sun received considerable airplay on WTMD, WRLT, WKNH, WFPK and WCRD. In February 2011, the band signed a record deal with Mick Management but soon enough shifted to RCA Records and released their official self-titled debut album in June 2012. The latter is composed of several of their original songs already released on I Want! I Want!, while it also featured new tracks made for the album, and meant to reflect the type of ambiance and energy the band exuded in their live concerts. Quoted to be an art-rock poppy quartet by SPIN Magazine, the band has also been called a Band Crush by Nylon Magazine due to their 'infectious guitar riffs', 'swirly pop beats' and loudly mixed sing-a-long choruses'. Walk the Moon tickets are the dominant topic of town-talk among punk rock fans who enjoy their artistically incorporated raw music form.
The first single by Walk the Moon was written by Petricca alongside New York songwriter/singer Nick Lerangis when the two were closing the end of their college. The song was named after a college professor from Kenyon College, and was mean to reflect the joy of college years and youth. It came out as a hit and was named the track of summer 2011 in an Esquire article titled Thirty Summer Songs Each Man Should Listen To. Its official video was issued to coincide with the debut release of I Want I Want in 2010. The video was described by MTV Hive as choreographed hilariously, shot beautifully in one place and interestingly neon. It was produced by Contrast Productions, a local Cincinnati Company, and featured choreography by Kim Popa from PONES Inc., alongside a cast consisting of the band members' friends. The video was soon made part of the video rotation on American Eagle Outfitters in May 2011 while it was also featured on hit TV program Vampire Diaries. Around the same time, the video was chosen as iTunes' single of the week, and was named MTV's song of the summer. Amazon and Seventeen Magazine named it in their list of the year's top songs, while it also peaked on Alt. The song has now been remixed by Trouble Productions and Fool's Gold.
In 2011, Walk the Moon was invited to perform on SXSW and also made an appearance on Last Call on Carson Daily. The group has supported Weezer and Panic! At the Disco on chosen dates and even went on to complete a tour in 2011 spring alongside west coast music group, Grouplove. They are known to paint their faces during live shows and share enough with the crowds. The group has described their concert talks as their concert tradition. In fact their process of face painting was filmed by Bonnaroo's camera during the festival in 2011.
Walk the Moon has participated in many festival including Summerfest Music Festival, Sasquatch Music Festival, Firefly Music Festival and an iTunes Festival held in London. They also performed in the famous Midtown Music Festival where they played on the Southeast Great Music Hall Stage as well as on the much-awaited Lollapolooza on its twentieth anniversary. They have appeared on TV talk shows with David Letterman, Conan and Jimmy Fallon. Their second single called Tightrope was featured in an advertisement for an HP laptop. The band has established quite the reputation for playing live, so hurry and grab Walk the Moon tickets. Their live performances are a must-watch.
