T in the Park is a three-day major music festival held in Scotland each year. The festival was first organized at Strathclyde Country Park in 1994 and through the years it has grown in size and influence. It is named after its main sponsor, the brewing company Tennents and is promoted by Big Day Out.
Today T in the Park has become one of the most important and critically acclaimed music events on the international festival circuit. T in the Park was originally a two-day festival but since 2007 has taken place over three days. This year, a weekend camping was introduced just a day before musicians performed.
Scotlands favorite pint Tennents Lager is noted distinctly for supporting the Scottish Live scene in the late 1980s. T in the Park was established when one of the UKs leading concert promoters, DF Concerts, paired with Tennents Lager.
DF Concerts had for some time been considering organizing the Scotlands first large scale, multi-stage music event to act as an annual focal point for the music scene. Tennents assured them of their support of live music. The first T in the Park took place at Strathclyde Country Park in 1994. However, since 1997, it has been organized at lush environs of Balado, Scotland.
DF Concerts teamed up with MCD Promotions of Eire and founded a sister company named Big Day Out to promote the music event. In addition to providing a platform where musicians could show off their music talent and creative potential, other attractions were also taken care of.
There were various concession stalls and shops provided, as well as a large funfair. The first festival fired the enthusiasm of around 2000 fans got off to an artistic success. But, on financial grounds, it turned out less successful.
Acts appearing in the opening years included Primal Scream, Oasis, Crash Test Dummies, Blur, The Manic Street Preachers, Rage Against the Machine and Cypress Hill.
The following years have been greeted with ever increasing popularity and acclaim. It would not be wrong to say that T in the Park plays an important role in the development of the Scottish music scene, with the T Break Stage.T Break Stage has always been very significant for unsigned Scottish music bands.
In 1996, main attractions were Radiohead, Pulp and No Doubt, and in 1997 the event moved to its present site of Balado, Kinross-shire. Over the years, the Tennent's Lager initiative has uncovered hidden musical gems such as Poor Old Ben, Unkle Bob, The Cinematics, Dogs Die in Hot Cars, Biffy Clyro and many.
With a large number of artists performing across 10 stages over 2 days, T in the Park was consistently attracting the finest homegrown talent such as Franz Ferdinand, Travis, KT Tunstall and Biffy Clyro.
The best thing people appreciated about organizers was that they set a stage which was shared by both international artists like Green Day, Foo Fighters, REM, Oasis, and Radiohead and homegrown talent alike.
2005s event sold out in a record breaking four days. Today, T in the Park attracts over 69,000 music fans from across the country and around the over. This popularity can be attributed to the festivals unique atmosphere, the legendary Balado crowd and, an annual line-up.
The 2008 T in the Park festival took place on 11th July through 13th July. The weekend saw the return of the best music festival in Britain featuring Rage Against the Machine, The Verve and R.E.M. on the Main Stage and The Chemical Brothers, Kaiser Chiefs and The Prodigy on the Radio 1 / NME Stage.
Also were there large camping areas to cater for the majority of festival-goers who stay for the duration of the event. Since the festival has long been carbon neutral, and had excellent policies to protect the local environment and waterways, its green credentials were recognized with the award of the Greener Festival Awards 2008.
The scope of the T in the Park event has increased over time with the R1/NME Stage, the Slam Tent, the X- Tent, and the Futures Stage and many other new talent and entertainment areas.
With an attendance of 80,000 in the last event, the festival is now the only enormo-event that actively encourages and celebrates the participation of the music prime constituents, young bands.
The 2009 festival is scheduled to take place on Friday 10th and will last till Sunday 12th of July. Organizer Geoff Ellis has announced some acts that he will be featuring for next years festival. So get your tickets to Balado if youre 17, full of beans and looking for something that makes you feel part of a festival community.
