The Word was created because of the band members' mutual passion of gospel tunes as well as the tradition of the Sacred Steel. During the early years, two of the band members, Luther Dickinson and Chris Chew were particularly intrigued by the famous single, Without God from "Sacred Steel Live!" album. It was through this single that they discovered Robert Randolph and urged him to join their group. All in all, every band member had a keen interest in music and it was this fervor that encouraged them all to come together and produce the amazing tunes.  

Although The Word is much like the other Sacred Steel bands, what sets it apart from others is perhaps a complete lack of vocals mixed with unusual singing and preaching. An important element of the music created in churches, this gave the band a unique edge. The band offers an eclectic mix of tunes by focusing its attention, both on the organ, and the electric piano, which is way more prominent in their music than in the conventional Sacred Steel tunes.

Not only this, another distinctive aspect of the band is that the drummer, Cody Dickinson, also makes use of electric washboard on some of the singles. Apart from all this, the band has gained a standing for its energetic and encouraging live shows. Typically, there is just one vocal microphone during their live concerts. Controlled by Randolph, who uses it to encourage the audience and also to occasionally add some spiritual exclamations between the songs, their live shows are always looked forward to. 

The Word hit the music scene in 2001, with their self-titled debut album. Produced with Ropeadope Records, the album's single, Without God gained a lot of fame and became a milestone track of the band's career. Other traditional gospel tunes written by the group members were also highly appreciated by the audience. One of the most unexpected releases of 2001, this gospel group entered the music industry with a bang. Its combination of blues, rock, funk and soul adds a unique groove to their music.
