Walkmen are Hamilton Leithauser Matt Barrick, Paul Maroon, Walter Martin and Peter Bauer. This indie rock band plays a very interesting progressive rock offshoot and revival of Post-punk rock. The band came together in 2000, when Jonathan Fire*Eater's ex-members Paul Maroon on the guitar and piano, organ and bass player Walter Martin and drummer Matt Barrick joined another duo. Peter Bauer on the bass and organ with vocalist/guitarist Hamilton Leithauser were ex-members of the Recoys; they joined the trio to complete the band. Before Barrick, Martin and Maroon moved to New York they recorded their signature music at the Marcata Recording studio.
The band's members grew up in the surroundings of DC. At St. Albans School high school they began playing for one band or another. All of them wanted a career in music together and the answer to that was their own band. They made their first career move when they relocated to Harlem and started recording. Slowly and gradually they moved up and became an important part of the New York City's budding rock scene. The breakup of Jonathan Fire*Eater and the Recoys meant that the Walkmen were not new as recording artists. They used saving from their past contract they created their very own rehearsal and recording area in uptown NYC. They rehearsed and recorded in this private space and later dubbed their recordings at the Marcata Studios.
Walkmen enjoy a special place in the world of alternative music. They wanted to move away from commonplace garage rock sound wanted to experiment. The band mainly played with vintage instruments to begin with. They artistically recreated a very unique sound of indie rock, never heard before. The band is particularly fond of one instrument the upright piano. They extensively used it in their recordings throughout and the results have inspired critic's ands public alike. However, the progressive bit about their music was not noticed until the release of their debut EP. Their self-titled EP was released in 2001 under a small label Startime International. Joe's Pub (East Village) became the first venue that showcased their first live debut performance. This performance featuring songs from the EP was a hit. It encouraged the band to move further and work on their music.
The band released their studio album Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone in the spring of 2002. It featured Leithauser's wonderful vocals in the sounds of sparse bass, striking piano keys and roaring guitars. Their work was different from all contemporary and indie rock bands of that time. However, the album still received average reviews for sounding like The Cure and earlier music of U2. Two years later the band released their sophomore album Bows+Arrows that became a No. 63 in UK. The album was the critic's favorite with featured tracks The Rat and Little House of Savages. It was a completely different effort compared to the debut. Another two years took the band to release the third studio effort A Hundred Miles Off; the album became a No. 163 with one hit Louisiana. The song featured a unique chorus of horns that was applauded by critics but got mix reviews in general.
"Pussy Cats" Starring the Walkmen, was a cover album of John Lennon/ Harry Nilsson album Pussy Cats (1974). From You & Me (2008) to Lisbon (2010), the band improved its fan following. They became more active on touring and also started working on their new album Heaven which was released in 2012. The album became a No. 30 in US and No. 82 in the UK. Heaven became a commercial and acclaim album for the band. Stereogum and Pitchfolk Media tagged it "the second best album of the year". The lyrics of songs on the album also got applauded for a good theme and clarity. The title song Heaven was the most successful song on the album. Walkmen tickets let you enjoy the live version of all hits and misses of the band in one night and in one concert. To be a part of their show this season, book your tickets at the earliest.
