The bar is pretty easy to access as it is located in the industrial area of Chicago. You can find it along the Chicago river near the North Branch. Factories surround the bar with the City of Chicago Fleet Management Facility producing most of the noise. With the evolution of loud music, the place is filled with energy and excitement as the musicians play their hearts out every night.
The Hideout was built in 1934 and was run by various members during that time. It was a place where top 19th century business men and workers met for rounds of beers and drinks. The Hideout was originally created for people who wanted to forget the worries of life and to spend time by enjoying the best drinks with country, jazz, punk and alternative musicians. A wide variety of artists were invited regularly to play for the people after the 21st century.
The Hideout is the place where Robin Hitchcock sung classic rock songs with Mr. Rudy Day. Jack White performed at The Hideout and Phantom Planet recorded their low budget video of 'California' at The Hideout as well. The all-time great performers of the bar include Jon Langford who has been performing with most bands that played at The Hideout. The place is also home to the experimental music produced by Glenn Kotche, Mikhail Jorgensen, Jon Stirratt and Jeff Tweedy. Zwan have been performing regularly at the bar with Nekko Case and Rick Nielsen.
It is the venue where many new bands make their debut. They come to perform again and again at different events and sometimes even with different band members. Nearly all members and workers of the bar are in a band one way or another. The Hideout supports nearly all causes and most of the money generated from events is used for charity. Musical shows are supported by plays and general discussions. Christmas parties are held at The Hideout nearly every year and baby parties are held throughout the year.
The Block Party is one of the biggest events of the year for The Hideout. Kim, Sunny Mountain and Jimmy Martin performed at the Block Party. dB reunited and performed for the first time in 17 years at the Block Party. While David Yow and Steve Albini performed their own set of special acts the audience loved. Neko Case debuted with her band at the Block Party when she borrowed guitars from other players after coming to Chicago from Canada. The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians celebrated their 40th Anniversary with legendary sax man Fred Anderson here. It was at this event that the Jim Hightower introduced Freakwater, a 32 piece punk-rock band.
