The Heads of State was founded by members of the ensemble "New Edition". Established in 2008 Brown, Tresvant and Gill wanted to create a one of a kind R&B band, a dream they were never able to accomplish with their 1990 band, "New Edition". Touring almost immediately, the first tour the band embarked on was the Summit Tour of 2008. In July 2011, The Heads of State was invited to perform at the Essence Music Festival held in New Orleans. At the festival the three members reunited with Bell Biv DeVoe to perform as "New Edition". The three members who make up The Heads of State have been enjoying successful careers as solo artists as well. Born in 1969, the first member of the group i.e. Robert Barisford Brown, more popularly known as Bobby Brown is a popular American dancer, songwriter and singer. Entering the music scene with the group "New Edition" in 1983, Brown went onto collaborate with the 1978 band "The Bricks".
Leaving these groups to focus on his solo career, Brown gained international fame with his sophomore studio release, "Don't Be Cruel". One of his most famous singles includes "My Prerogative" for which he won a Grammy. Brown has released ten chart topping singles that have been charted on various Billboard US Charts in between 1986 to 1992. The singer is also said to be the pioneer of Jack Swing music, as he was the one to combine tunes of hip hop and R&B.
Another popular member of The Heads of State is Ralph Edward Tresvant Jr. more popularly known as Ralph Tresvant. Born in 1968, the singer hails from the city of Roxbury. Tresvant initiated his career in 1983 as well, when he became a part of "New Edition". Working with the group till 1989, Tresvant finally decided it was time to pursue a solo career. Signing a deal with MCA Records, Tresvant has to date released three studio albums out of which his debut self-titled release peaked at number one on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart. Furthermore several single releases such as "Sensitivity", "Stone Cold Gentleman", "Do What I Gotta Do" and "Money Can't Buy You Love" made their way to charts in US, Canada, New Zealand and UK.
The third and final member who completes the band's trio is Johnny Gill; an American actor and singer. He too has shared similar successes to that of his band members.
