The Dead South is not your traditional bluegrass band. They often experiment with their sound to offer something new to the fans. This is what makes their music so unique. The group is currently on the road in support of their latest release, 'Sugar & Joy.' The guys plan to perform a number of shows across the U.S. So, book your concert tickets in time if you are interested in attending one of their upcoming concerts live.
The Dead South: The Formation
While playing in a short-lived alternative grunge band, Danny Kenyon and Nate Hilts decided to form a "rockin' stompin' bluegrass band." After the band dissolved, the duo became serious about forming a group and recruited Scott Pringle and Colton Crawford into the band's lineup. Pringle learned to play mandolin while Crawford picked up banjo and before long, The Dead South began working on their sound which led to them introducing their own signature bluegrass style.
Based in Regina, Saskatchewan, The Dead South started to play live gigs around Canada to build some popularity and also to test how the fans will react to their brand of music. After performing a series of shows in different venues, the band realized that it is time to share their material with the world and so, the quartet's first EP, 'The Ocean Went Mad and We Were to Blame' was released in 2013. Recorded at Soul Sound Studios, this extended play was loaded with five well-written and meaningful song, Banjo Odyssey, Wishing Well, The Dirty Juice, Fruit and Salad and Honey You.
Making the Right Noise
The Dead South showed their musical prowess when they released their debut studio album, 'Good Company' in 2014. Issued by Devil Duck Records, the record brought them some traction in the United States mainly because of its single, In Hell I'll Be In Good Company which received more than 160 million hits on YouTube. It also appeared on the Top20 on US iTunes overall chart. Following the release of the album, the guys toured Canada and Europe extensively. In 2015, Colton Crawford left the band due to which spot was given to Eliza Mary Doyle.
In 2016, The Dead South dropped their sophomore studio album, 'Illusion and Doubt' via Curve Music. This record further proved that just how much of an unstoppable force they can became when the guys combine their talents together. The effort peaked at the fifth spot on the Bluegrass chart and was also certified gold in their native Canada. Moreover, it also won them a Juno for, 'Best Traditional Roots Album.'
Sugar & Joy
On October 11, 2019, The Dead South came out with their third and latest studio project, 'Sugar & Joy.' This album brought their way even more success and reached at the first spot on the Bluegrass Albums chart. The guys have now set out on tour to promote this album to the masses and will be performing shows in cities like, Boston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Louisville.
