Tao the art of the drum is another in a long line of sensational events by the famous Japanese group Drum Tao. Drum Tao is one of the most amazing group of live performers you will find anywhere in the world. Some things should be seen to be believed and well a performance by this group is one of them for sure. Everyone who wants to be entertained should buy Tao the art of the drum tickets for a spectacle they won’t ever forget.
Tao the art of the drum will be a drum beating extravaganza because that’s what their performances are based on but this will be drum beating like no other. Their performances are a fusion of martial arts and taiko drumming. Taiko is an age old ritual in Japan where the locals beat drums ferociously to appeal to their Gods for rain etc. It was made famous by different festivals and first used as a form of entertainment in the 1970’s.
It was taken to a whole new level when Ikuo Fujitaka founded the Drum Tao in 1993. He started hiring people and started training them to perfect the fusion of marital arts and the traditional drumming at Grandioso, their home base on a mountain. The training and every day routine is very tough but Fujitaka is a former gymnast so he knew the value of practicing hard and with dedication. Around one hundred people apply to be members of the Drum Tao but only two to three make the cut after going through very tough tests of their drumming skills, mental and physical endurance and most of all their ability to work as a part of the team. The performance of the group has to be synched to perfection so the ability to work with the group is the most important facet need to be a part of the group.
The Drum Tao members create sensational events like Tao the art of the drum for us to enjoy but for that they make sacrifices to work on their routines which starts when they get up at 5am every day. Then they have traditional Japanese breakfast which is followed by two hours of strenuous training to hone their muscles. When all that is done the group starts to practice their drums and martial arts choreography routines for a staggering ten hours. They again get together to have dinner at 10 pm and go to bed around midnight to again get up at 5am in the morning.
Everyone who saw the group perform in its early days was stunned and awed by their amazing performances but it was all done locally. The Drum Tao wanted to showcase their skills at a bigger canvas and after years of hard work they finally made their way to the famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2004 for their first ever over seas performance. That trip was a complete sell-out just like their next trip to the festival in 2005. The performances by these muscular entertainers were simply stunning. The acts were a mix of dance, martial arts and nonstop taiko drumming coupled with more melodious sounds of other Japanese instruments.
The complete harmony of all these different styles in a single act turned Drum Tao into a sensation. The Edinburgh festival brought the group into the spotlight and got the attention of international promoters. The group then started going on regular world tours to countries all around the globe. They had a long tour of Germany and Switzerland where they performed over one hundred shows to full houses everywhere they went. A tour of Taipei and Australia followed which were also complete sellouts. The dream of touring America materialized in 2010 which was followed by an invitation to Canada for the Vancouver Olympics where the group sold out fifty events.
Drum Tao has been watched live by over five million viewers in over four hundred cities around the world. The rise has been spectacular and it doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon.
