It all started in the early 1970s when the founders of the band, Southside Johnny and Steve Van Zandt, played together in bands at local venues. They were often joined by Bruce Springsteen and other future members of The Asbury Jukes. The bands that they were part of at the time were often short lived. Also, there was lots of shuffling in the lineup of musicians of these bands. In 1974, Southside Johnny began to play with the Blackberry Booze Band who was the earlier version of The Asbury Jukes. As time went by, the band was noticed by Steve Popovich of Epic Records who signed them to the label. And so, the band began recording their first studio album, I Don't Want to Go Home. On the band's second album, Springsteen co-wrote three songs and contributed two others. The third album, titled Hearts of Stone featured entirely of original content. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were hence off to a great start.
The band was shown playing in the 1977 film Between the Lines. This helped them gain even more fame and attention from audiences around the country. In 1979, the band signed to Mercury Records. Steve Van Zandt, who had been a band member was replaced by Billy Rush. During this period Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes recorded five albums, including Reach Up and Touch the Sky, which was a double live album. The band's lineup went through further changes when Billy Rush left the band to work with another. The members that came and went served to add to the expertise of the remaining members of the band. They utilized the experiences and knowledge of former band members to improve their music for the fans and achieve greater commercial success.
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes received critical acclaim when they released Pills and Ammo in 2010. Following this release, Southside Johnny started a separate band on the side called The Poor Fools. This has a different sound than that of the Asbury Jukes. Today, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes tour in the Northeast United States as well as Europe, where their music has become quite popular.
