History of the Seattle Symphony goes all the way back to December 29, 1903 when it took the stage for its very first live performance. Since then, Seattle Symphony has strived to educate its audiences with its string of live programs. During its early years, the Symphony was led by Sir Thomas Beecham who developed its early reputation. Later on, the music directors like Milton Katims and Rainer Miedel led the symphony to achieve new milestones. Under Miedel's leadership, Seattle Symphony also toured across Europe for the first time in 1980. The Symphony also won 12 Grammy Award nominations and two Emmy Awards during the tenure of Gerard Schwarz as the Music Director.
Presently, Seattle Symphony is under the leadership of Ludovic Morlot, who is among some of the top conductors of our time. Apart from critically acclaimed performances of the Rite of Spring and the Damnation of Faust, Morlot also designed the Sonic Evolution which turned out to be a huge success. The 2011 - 12 marked the inaugural season for both Morlot and the Sonic Evolution. The idea behind the creation of the series was to attract that portion of audience that isn't much fond of pure classical repertoire. With Sonic Evolution, the Symphony celebrates Seattle's musical heritage. The inaugural edition of the series paid homage to Kurt Cobain, Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix. The night showcased three short compositions inspired by the works of these three as well as the fourth piece called Savanna on which Seattle Symphony performed alongside Hey Marseilles. The Sonic Evolution turned out to be a success among the audience members and critics, which is why it returns for yet another edition this season.
