In this mixtape, he showcased not just his brilliant prowess over the R&B genre, but also added a dash of the pop soul genre. Audiences got a taste of his dynamic voice and his impeccable songwriting skills.
The release included his fist hit single, "Ride," which became instantly popular and sold about 10,000 digital tracks daily, all before it aired on the radio or was backed by a recording label. He released a music video in collaboration with director Dan Gotti. This video received more than three million views upon its release. Moreover, SoMo got support from Mannie Fresh. Fresh made an appearance in SoMo's video for the song "Kings and Queens."
As his song, "Ride," carried on getting more attention, the Texan artist embarked on a sold out headlining tour in the US. Republic Records immediately took notice of SoMo's independent success and in October 2013, they offered him a record deal.
SoMo released his self-titled first album in February 2014. The album debuted on the Billboard charts at the sixth position while it was the number one album of the iTunes Album Chart. SoMo came up with a "SoMo Sunday" campaign that featured the talented artist releasing a cover of a classic song each Sunday. He would interact with his fans directly in videos that he would post on YouTube. The series were successful and ended up getting more than 100 million views. Apart from the videos going viral online, they also helped him in getting support from other artists such as Ginuwine, Wale and Trey Songz.
