You may have heard of witch doctors but The Saw Doctors are a completely different ball game. Instead of casting spells and exorcising evil spirits, The Saw Doctors cast rock ditties and will smoke out all the non-musical spirits within you. The Irish band has been building up an international reputation since the mid 1980s and has churned out one chart dominating tune after the other. Their music has been compared to that of the Beatles as well as the Byrds and their image has been liked to that of Bruce Springsteen, characteristic of his working class background.
Their legacy is often weighted against that of their Irish band of brothers, U2. However, The Saw Doctors have carved an appealing niche in the rock music market, garnering an international cult following in the process. The Saw Doctors tickets will serve as your passports into their domain of island rock music.
At a time when most of Europe was under the Iron Curtain and the "Iron Lady" was calling the shots next door, a bunch of musicians decided to come together in the Irish city of Tuam to form The Saw Doctors. Leo Morgan had developed his musical chops whilst playing for a local reggae band and got together with Davy Carton of the band Blaze X and Mary O'Connor. The trio took to performing small gigs at clubs and bars and other venues around Tuam.
Following Mary's departure, Moran and Carton invited other musicians to join their act. Thus, a rolling lineup has been characteristic of The Saw Doctors' sound over the years, with ten members having entered and left the band. Other than the founding members Moran and Carton, the band currently has Kevin Duffy, Rickie O'Neil and Anthony Thistlethwaite.
The Saw Doctors started slicing things up with their second single "I Useta Lover" that became an instant hit in 1990 and went number one on the Irish singles chart, holding on to the top spot for nine weeks. "N17" / "It Won't Be Tonight" became their second hit for that year, with the track peaking at the second spot on the charts. Its lyrics and central theme resonated with the Irish expatriate community abroad as it touched upon aspects of homesickness. Their debut album If This Is Rock and Roll, I Want My Old Job Back that came out in 1991 captured these sentiments and shot straight up to the top of the Irish albums chart.
The follow-up album All The Way From Tuam was also a critical and commercial success when it was released in 1992. Yet, it wasn't until the release of the four-song LP Small Bit of Love that they got a foothold in the UK market. The LP managed to climb up to the 24th position on the British charts, with a follow-up release in 1996 titled World of Good upping the ante by reaching the 15th spot. The same year also saw the release of The Saw Doctors' third studio album, Same Oul' Town, which entered the top-ten on the UK Albums chart. Sing a powerful Song that was put out in the following year was basically a selection of 17 songs from the band's first three albums.
The Saw Doctors garnered further acclaim in 1997 by recording a theme song titled "She Says" for Give My Head Peace, a popular comedy on BBC at that time. The track was released along with three other songs as an LP the same year. Their entry into the US market was through their song "Never Mind the Strangers," which was featured in a radio campaign by Guinness for their Harp Lager.
The Saw Doctors have proven their mettle on the road several times, having toured extensively in a career that spans a quarter of a century. They have released CDs and DVDs of their live concerts, such as of the one performed at Galaway's Black Box Theater in 2004 and of a performance at Cape Cod's Melody tent in 2009. Claim the Saw Doctors tickets now to be enthralled by their hair-raising sound and punk harmonies.
