Born in 1955, Sandra Bernhard is from Flint, Michigan. She moved to Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of ten and spent her teenage years there. By the age of nineteen she decided to relocate to Los Angeles, where she started working in a high end salon as a manicurist. She started performing in her debut one-woman show in 1985 that was named "I'm Your Woman". An album release came forth in the same year that presented music from the genres of pop and comedy. Bernhard was also seen making several appearances on the David Letterman Show with her close friend Madonna.

The nineties proved to be in favor of the artist as she was seen appearing in the television sitcom, Roseanne. Appearing as Nancy Bartlett, a lesbian character, Bernhard was amongst the first few actresses to portray such a controversial role openly. She was seen taking on more daring roles as she appeared in a nude pictorial in the notorious Playboy magazine in 1992.
